Through failed companies and teams, numerous tried and tested methods have become redundant. The recent world-changing events have introduced the demand for some much-needed work standard adjustments. 

Management methods that have gone out of style prove to be far more harmful and ineffective than newer adaptations. Some of these methods left employees unmotivated, unwilling to work, and even feeling degraded by management. 

Fortunately, there are several effective modern alternatives to consider. These modern alternatives include methods such as participative leadership and employee empowerment, to mention only a few. 

But with that said, if you are still using these outdated styles, there’s no better time to transform your management style than now.


This way seemed to be the best way to get results in a business, but it had the opposite outcome as time went on. Hovering over employees while trying to perform their duties makes them nervous and prone to mistakes. It isn’t easy to complete one’s duties if one feels their every action is scrutinized. 

Sometimes micromanagement is seen as a sign of distrust of the employee by the employer, giving the impression that the subordinate can’t execute their role. Constant unnecessary interruptions from management create demotivation in many ways. Accepting that this type of management needs to be done away with, management will open themselves up to a world of tremendous change in the attitude towards their staff. 

The Hands-Off Manager

A hands-off approach doesn’t solve the circumstances we face in today’s work environment. It is overseeing to implement a certain amount of physical labour while ensuring that you as a leader still show authority. When the manager believes they are entitled to avoid physical work, it creates an unfair work scenario. 

Even though the aggressive micromanagement approach will not work, there needs to be a balance between it and delegating working methods. Taking one’s hands off the wheel will only worsen the situation if it is one where undertakings need to improve. Usually, managers that work this way do not even bother to attain their CPI certificate as they are not interested in resolving any matters, let alone difficult ones. 

Absent Leadership

Absent leadership can be experienced in so many ways and not just someone being out of commission. A leader may not show up for their team by not creating a career path for them to follow for their elevation. They may not give the necessary support for training, or anything employees need for career growth. 

When required to give an opinion for promotion, they might not provide a fair assessment as they are never there to walk with their employees. When individuals report to you, they need to know that their efforts and achievements are both noticed and appreciated. 

Self-Serving Methods

Nothing good can come out of a leader that looks out for themselves in the workplace. If they are self-serving, then ultimately, they might as well not run a team and instead work alone. Leaders need to be present within the team and aware of everyone’s input and value. A manager or leader is not the core of a team; every member serves a vital function. 

When confronted with a self-serving manager, a team will fail as they have no one uplifting them. The goal is to get everyone to their best selves, which will elevate them from a performance perspective. 

The Authoritarian

Coming down hard on employees will not work no matter how you swing it; no one wants to be degraded, especially when they are giving their best. In any work setting, employees yearn for managers that make them feel like it’s okay to go through a learning process without having the whip cracked down on you. Any slight mistake should not result in a warning or hearing of some sort. 

There should be room for people to make errors and learn from them without risking their jobs. Fortunately, the authoritarian management style definitely won’t survive for much longer. 

As the world moves forward, employees realize the harmful impacts of toxic work environments. As a result, top talent is after work environments that promise beneficial management methods and uplifting surroundings. Modern tactics offer staff work-life balance and so many other benefits that boost employee satisfaction.

Modern management styles seek to empower employees for the benefit of both staff and the company. With current methods, teams will flourish, and each member can reach their full potential. So, if you are still holding onto old-school management methods, it’s high time to let go and welcome modern tactics that prove effective and far healthier for employee wellbeing.
