Hello, I’m Prince, a businessman entrenched in the world of waste tyre recycling. My journey wasn’t just about turning a profit; it was about transforming environmental waste into wealth and sustainability. Let me take you through the intricate process of waste tyre recycling, a path I embarked on to make a difference.

Discovering the Potential

My venture into waste tyre recycling began when I noticed the mounting tyre waste problem. Tyres were piling up, creating environmental hazards. That’s when I realized the untapped potential of these discarded materials. The journey started with a simple idea: converting waste into useful products, thereby contributing to a cleaner, greener earth.

Setting Up the Plant

The first step was setting up a recycling plant. It required meticulous planning, from selecting the right location to procuring the necessary machinery. The plant needed to be spacious enough to accommodate tyre storage, processing machinery, and finished product storage.

The Recycling Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Collection and Transportation: My journey in the waste tyre recycling business began with collecting discarded tyres. We set up collection points and logistics to transport these tyres to our recycling plant.
  2. Sorting and Pre-processing: Upon arrival at the plant, the tyres undergo sorting. Damaged and unusable tyres are separated. The usable ones are then cleaned and prepped for the recycling process.
  3. Shredding: The clean tyres are fed into a shredder. This machine breaks down the tyres into smaller pieces, making them easier to process. The shredding stage is crucial for efficient recycling.
  4. Steel and Fibre Removal: Tyres contain steel and fibre, which need to be removed. After shredding, the tyre pieces pass through a series of magnets and sieves to separate these materials. This separation is vital for the purity of the final product.
  5. Granulation and Milling: The next step involves granulating the tyre pieces into even smaller particles. These particles are then milled to produce a fine rubber powder. This powder is the base material for various recycled rubber products.
  6. Purification and Quality Check: The rubber powder is then purified to remove any remaining impurities. Rigorous quality checks are conducted to ensure the final product meets industry standards.
  7. Packaging and Distribution: Once the rubber powder passes quality checks, it’s packaged and prepared for distribution. This powder is then sold to manufacturers who use it to create new rubber products.

Throughout this process, I learned that waste tyre recycling is not just about disposing of waste responsibly but also about creating value from what is often considered worthless.

Challenges and Triumphs

Like any business, waste tyre recycling had its set of challenges. From regulatory hurdles to market dynamics, each phase of setting up and running the plant taught me valuable lessons. However, the satisfaction of contributing to environmental sustainability made every challenge worthwhile.

The Environmental Impact

The environmental benefits of waste tyre recycling are immense. By converting discarded tyres into useful products, we reduce landfill waste, decrease pollution, and conserve natural resources. This business isn’t just profitable; it’s a significant step towards a sustainable future.

Prince’s Reflections

Reflecting on my journey, I realize that waste tyre recycling is more than a business; it’s a commitment to our planet. The process of transforming waste tyres into valuable resources has been both challenging and rewarding.

    • I am also interested about this matter…. India is not in the picture as I still have not found any statistics of reusing the tyre/cured rubber product waste where US leads the market with approx 90% reusing of tyre waste…. RMA stats show that by 2017-20 India’s automobile sector will flourish and so a huge market is going to rise in scrap and waste tyres but its recycling is still not accounted….. I don’t know exactly it is right or wrong but there is a profitable market in this business….

    • hi Martha your idea of starting a tyre recycling business is pretty good.Unfortunately it is not a viable business in Botswana because of the supporting industries. Botswana unfortunately does not have industries that can buy your recycled rubber.Again the population of Botswana is pretty small so for you to get access is pretty difficult. I was in Botswana for 14 years and now i own a recycling business in Palanpur (Gujarat) India. The whole idea is you should be able to sell your products locally. If you are able to sign a contract with local councils for used tyres and stop the import to Zimbabwe then you could win on the raw material side, also sign up with companies in South Africa to buy your recycled products then your selling is secured. Even your plant should not be very big in size as your access to raw material is limited. If at all you decide to to still start the business you should attend an International Rubber Expo in Chennai(India) from 19-21 January. If you need any other information please contact me via email zahir_bhornya@yahoo.com
